OUR STORY
It took us two decades of living abroad and trotting through many art fairs and museums throughout the world to realize that our home country India is a literal treasure trove of ancient arts and crafts that date back centuries. These centuries-old, ancient creative practices survive to this day thanks to the family apprenticeship model followed by indigenous artisanal communities. Tried and true traditional crafting techniques have been passed down from one generation to the next with tremendous pride and care. Master craftsmen in India weave the vibrant colors, textures and materials that Nature makes available to them, to create unique art forms that mirror the collective identity, culture and heritage of India.
But this model is threatened with extinction and being lost forever. Shockingly, a large number of Indian craftsmen today are not able to fulfill their basic needs, as their age-old product designs are often no longer perceived to be “functional” or utilitarian” enough compared to mass produced alternative products. We strongly felt the necessity to help preserve the practice of ancient craftsmanship in India, the unique indigenous arts and crafts of India, and to empower our artisanal communities to remain competitive in today’s global marketplace.
With this mission of pledged support and commitment to preserving the fine workmanship of skilled Indian artisans and their traditional arts and crafts, we decided to give up our lucrative lifestyle in the West to better connect with our roots. We started Adya Heritage, a natural and eco-conscious lifestyle company based in Kolkata, our hometown. Adya Heritage employs grass roots level craftsmen and artisans to showcase India’s age-old skills and craftsmanship.
We sought to amalgamate a modern design aesthetic with age-old artisanal craftsmanship in order to create sustainable, eco-conscious products that find wider acceptance at modern marketplaces worldwide. At Adya Heritage, we use only natural, ecofriendly, and sustainable materials to create our product portfolio. We strive to ensure that skilled craftsmanship and ancient techniques are preserved rather than forgotten. At Adya Heritage, our craftsmen and craftswomen are never forgotten or left behind. It is our way of helping to empower our artisanal craftsman communities for a brighter future, one craft at a time.
